Ah, it's a beautiful day outside. The sun is shinning, the birds are singing, and the fire is... wait. Fire! Wha... Fire tornado! Oh, this can't be good. Or is it? Just think of all the cool things you can do with a fire tornado, like; run from it and try not to get blown into it. That much activity is sure to make someone burn up from fun, right?

Riots in Greece: Police Hit With Molotov

Amid the rioting in Greece today, some protesters through Molotov at riot police. People are angry over government spending cuts which came was part of a deal with the European Union's bailout package. The crowd was estimated to be 18,000(police's estimate) to 60,000(trade union's estimate) depending on who was asked. (thejournal)

You are looking at the puzzle from Hell. Okay, maybe not, but it could be close. If you think it looks very benign, you would almost be right. When The Intimidator takes it's other form,however, it might just surprise people! Created by GarE Maxton, this is a 125-piece puzzle that very nearly represents a crazy Jenga game.

Multiple types of metal went into the construction of this puzzle. Namely, aluminum, brass bronze, copper, magnesium, and steel. Looks like a dizzying array of piece when laid out. Hope you don't lose a piece if you can get one of these...

And here we go, the final product of this hair-raising conundrum. It looks so pretty, doesn't it. It's almost surprising that you can get something that looks so finished from a object that looks so disjointed and different from it's earlier form.

Korea's Paik Nam June Media Bridge

Wow, this bridge looks awesome! It's not everyday I see plans for a tricked out futuristic bridge that might actually be built. It's not even an average futuristic bridge either. This thing is suppose to have a shopping mall, docking ports, gardens, and solar panels. I'm not even sure if it's will allow the normal road traffic through.

Dune Fashion: Weird and Cool

Ah, so the time is finally upon us. Our Dune-like overlords have come to take over the Earth. Or maybe not. Dune is now hitting the runways with a new flare for style. Just in time too, I might add. Halloween is almost upon us! We must bow down before our Dune overlords to see if we can get those cool costumes.

The outfits are part of a feature in UK culture mag Dazed & Confused called "Inflate." Though very Dune-esque, they also remind me of Stephen Hendee's homespun post-apocalyptic fashion, with an ice age twist.

Duck Hunt: Lamp Mod

This is one of those lamps that just makes you stop and say, "Yeah, that's awesome". Duck Hunt is a game that's dear to many who played it. It took a bit of skill and patients, but before you knew it you were hooked on the game. And before you ask, no cartridges were hurt in the creation of this lamp. It was created by Estranged-Illusions from devaintart.

This all started when I saw a Zapper and went 'hmm, bet that would make a cool lamp...' so I gutted one and wired it up- next was a 1.5 scale replica of a game cartridge for the base (made from cardboard, weighted with decorative stones that I had no use for, hehe)... and a painted thrift shade with fun foam cut-outs! Ugh, I don't know *how* many hours I sat there cutting out pixellated grass and trees and dogs and ducks..... why must I choose such picky work to do?

DIY Coilgun: Deadly Awesomeness

After two years of work, Jason (Larsplatton on youtube) has put together a fully functional coilgun. What's a coilgun you ask? Oh, just something that can shoot projectiles at high velocity via the use of magnetic velocity. Yeah, it's freaking awesome. This is one of those times when you look at a DIY project and say, "damn, wish I had the ability to build that too." Too bad it doesn't cool with schematics, but it does come with a video!

This coilgun is no toy. Using a large electromagnet, made from 10-gauge magnet wire, it delivers more kinetic energy than a .45 handgun, but less than an M16 rifle, according to Jason. If Jason was able to do this in his backyard with off-the-shelf components, you can just imagine what proper defense contractors should be able to do with a few billion dollars.

The maker, Alex, says that the inspiration of the Life-Size Power Costume from pele!’s Power Loader costume, which is being made mainly as a Halloween costume. Moreover, there are alien movies as well that Alex watched in his time. The best part of this work is that unbelievably, the whole process of designing and making the power loader costume took quite a short time.

Star Wars Desk Mod: TIE Fighter

That's it, we're all screwed. Someone built a life-size TIE fighter that could fit...um, a cat! Yes, those cats have been plotting to take over the world forever, and now they've gotten a human to build them this doomsday device! Seroulsy though, this is an awesome case mod. It's actually a two for one deal in that it houses the computer as well. This little baby was built by David Berry as part of the Extreme Tech Science Fiction Case Mod Contest

"As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I knew my first mod would have to incorporate something from Star Wars, and I could think of nothing cooler than a TIE Fighter. I got the blueprints online and got to work. I started with the side panels (wings), which were cut from plywood. The cockpit of the TIE Fighter was most problematic part to build. After several failed attempts to create a ball out of Bondo, I finally found the perfect sphere—a Jolly Ball (a pet store item). A plywood cutout that I installed inside the ball holds all the computer components, and PVC piping connects the cockpit to the wings. Accurate detailing was created using wood filler, wood strips, glues, paints, and caulking. The whole thing was painted, and the desktop surface (Plexiglas) was attached."

Highway Guard Rail: Win

Like most things in life, the yellow cap on a guard rail gets unnoticed. It's not particularly fancy, but it does do something completely awesome. That's right, I said the yellow cap-thingy is awesome. Hard to believe, I know. Basically, what it does is stops you from becoming a kabob when your car hits the end of the rail. So instead of the rail going right through your car, the yellow cap goes with your car and starts to peal off the rail, potentially saving your life.

Of course, things could go horrible wrong and you could end up like a kabob. It's pretty easy for things to malfunction, but when they do the rest of us get to look at pictures!

Bipedal Robot

The world is one step closer to impending robot domination with this latest creation. Built by the people at Chiba Institute of Technology in Japan, it's meant to be a platform to carry around the elderly or infirm. So not only will these things be exceedingly tall, they will also give the elderly the power to control the world. Oh god, the world is doomed. Can you imagine it, super-powered elderly people. I'm all for powered armor, but I want it for meeeeee.

The robot - rather androgynously called Core - is essentially just a pair of legs, which are able to bend and move around.
Crucially, the legs are topped by a platform that can be loaded with weights of up to 15st7lb (100kg).
It comes complete with shock absorbers and weighs in at around 36 stone.
At the moment the device is only a prototype, but developers believe Core could be used on building sites or even to move disabled people around.
Some bloggers have also speculated that the robot could have military purposes.
The team at Chiba hope to have a fully finished mobility robot by 2012.

Brilliant! A book with no words. Ah, it's like I'm in first grade again. I could watch these pictures move for hours and hours. Apparently you get 11 moving pictures of Star Wars awesomeness in this book by Rufus Butler Seder.

Employing a new technique in the books, Author Rufus Butler Seder has attempted to make Star Wars come to life which makes us view at the pictures moving inside a book....

The word Scanimation is derived from joining two words Scan and Animation, which means that scanned images are put to animation. In this book scrambled art images are covered with a striped clear sheet. On turning the page, the picture appears to move. (Walyou)

Angled Coffee Cup: Knows No Bounds

In a world full of crazy designs, this doesn't take the cake, but it does look cool. Also, what neat tricks can your coffee cup do? Not this, this, balancing act! Okay, so the tip-my-over look isn't very useful when there is coffee in the cup. It's still neat.

What would a coffee cup look like when it is placed in zero gravity? To find the answer, you need have a look at this mug. It can be tilted in place when not in use, as if it is trying to free itself from gravity and fly up into the sky. Reflective Art

Reflective art is pretty kick- ass if you ask me. The artists make drawling that looks normal except for seeming a little stretched out, but then if you put a cylinder mirror on the table - Bam! TARDIS Made From Lego's: Doctor Who

Oh hell yeah! A lego Tardis. It can't get any cooler than this. Well, maybe it can. What if it were life-size? I know that'd be sweet. Jon from JustJon put this custom Tardis together for the BrickFair, and had to work through quite a bit of technical challenges to bring the finished version together. Doctor Who was his inspiration for this awesomeness.

Earlier this summer, I was trying to think of some new ideas to build for the upcoming BrickFair. At the same time, I was watching the new series of Doctor Who and the two ideas came together. An amalgam of the Doctor’s time travel device and the Lego bricks with a technological twist was the goal.
I based my design on the David Tennant Doctor and analyzed pictures of him with the TARDIS. After examining the pictures, the first step was to figure out a way to get the windows to look right. By laying out the white bricks with the studs on top wouldn’t allow the blue frame between the windows, so a different technique needed to be used. After talking to my friend Lee, I started working on a SNOT (Studs Not On Top) technique that would let me put the white bricks and blue plates sideways. After several tries, I found a technique that worked utilizing pins to hold the stacks in place, but then the lower blue sections needed to be repositioned to center them within the holes below the windows. I worked on a way to use jumper plates to center them in the holes in a satisfactory way.

Nasa Sending A Probe to The Sun

I knew this day would come. Nasa already sent a probe straight into the Moon, and we all know how that ended. The Moon blew up and now there are no more title-waves. It was a poor day for beach communities everywhere. Also the conspiracy theorists were right, and all the people on the internet who were freaking out. Nasa just wanted to kill the Moon. They kicked up a cloud of dust to analyze water. What, did you think something else would happen?

Now Nasa wants to send a probe to the Sun, which by all rights is awesome. The new mission will be called the Solar Probe Plus. It's the size of a car, and it's job will be to operate near the corona of the Sun.

To that end, the craft will employ two different solar panel arrays to collect energy. A main array that will operate during the journey to power the ship's propulsion, while a second set will be made of liquid-cooled panels made of heat-resistant cells for when the probe studies the sun from a distance of 3.7 million miles. This is where we could find that we still don't have the tech to study the sun, as the high amounts of radiation the a temperature approaching 1400° Celsius could knock the probe out.
The Solar Probe Plus mission is right now aiming for a 2018 launch.

iSAVE: Airbags for Your Car's Exterior

Hey look! It's a bird. No, wait, it's a plain. No, it's an iSAVE! A what-save? You know, an iSAVE. It fit's in your pocket and it plays music, edits videos, and makes phone calls... oh wait. It doesn't do any of that. An iSave is Japan's way of saying the airbags for your car go on the outside. No more will you have to worry about little annoying key scratches on your car. The nice airbag exterior will protect you. Now a whole other world of problems are coming your way. Like if someone wants to take their iKEY and poke it through your iSAVE airbags!

Dubbed iSAVE (sigh…), the airbags deflate rapidly upon impact, just like conventional airbags, to soften the effects of a crash for pedestrians. The prototype car equipped with iSAVE that you can see on the pic above was shown earlier this week and is said to be the first of its kind. iSAVE can be used with electric cars only.
The research team behind the airbags says it expects to sell up to 50 units by year end for 3-wheeled cars before fully commercializing them in 2011 for four-wheeled vehicles. The iSAVE system for 4-wheeled cars will likely be priced at $17,800.

There is nothing quite like a DIY project that involves both technology and food. It's a combination of playing with toys and then eating which can't be beat! Of course if you suck with technology on this one your food is going to come out crappy. Also, if you suck at cooking... yeah you get my point. And if you don't, your food is going to get ruined! I'm just saying.

Peter Rauch used a proportional-integral-differential (PID) controller that modulates electrical power to a heating element to create a home-built electronic meat smoker. A touch-screen display let him manage the controller set point and control-loop parameters. A J-type thermocouple in the top of the smoker provides a voltage signal so the feedback loop can control the smoker's temperature. A second sensor, which reads meat temperature, is used only for monitoring and alarms. A user can enter a desired meat temperature, and receive an alert via a text message when the temperature reaches a preset value. Additionally, when the temperature reaches this setpoint, the controller can 'hold' the meat at a preset temperature to avoid overcooking it until you can remove it.

This looks like one hell of a fun project. I'll have to try it and see what I come up with!

Mmmm fresh air, in a bottle no-less. I say to myself all the time that the air just stinks outside! Someone should really do something about that, and now we have a solution. Stick a bottle to your mouth and you'll never have to constantly breath the same filthy air as the rest of those suckers out there! It's so awesome too because as you're saving yourself from air pollution you're sticking it to the rest of your neighbors by using an awesome wasteful product! The irony is delicious.

Boredom affects us all in strange ways. Take me for instance, I will flip through countless internet pages of ~~porn~~ educational pictures, but Francois Vautier did what few have done before. He made one hell of a wall-poster! Er, I mean he made "Blade Runner revisted"! Vautier took every frame of the movie Blade Runner and ran them out on a wall. He then ran a camera over them for, um, educational purposes! Warning, this video can make you a little dizzy.

How the video was made:

first step: the "picture" of the film. I extracted the 167,819 frames from 'Blade Runner' (final cut version 1h51mn52s19i). Then I assembled all these images to obtain one gigantic image of colossal dimensions: a square ofapproximately 60,000 pixes on one side alone, 3.5 gigapixels (3500 million pixels)

Second step: an illusion. I placed a virtual camera above this big picture. So what you see is like an illusion, because contrary toappearances there is only one image. It is in fact the relative movement of the virtual camera flying over this massive image which creates the animated film like a film in front of a projector.

UEFA bans the vuvuzela

Finally, the most annoying thing that barely qualifies as a musical instrument has been banned from any future UEFA events. I think we can all say that it was the right decision. Who wants to listen to an over-sized malformation of plastic blowing right next to their ear anyways.

UEFA, European football's governing body, has ruled that vuvuzelas should be banned from their matches.
This means the irksome plastic trumpet, which became infamous at the World Cup, will not be heard at Euro 2012 qualifiers or Champions League games.

Bosses say they came to the conclusion the instrument should not be taken into stadiums at matches in UEFA competitions after consultation with 53 member associations.

It was decided the noise could drown-out the singing and chanting of fans andthat "for reasons related to Europe's football culture and tradition" they should be banned.

He's a man of action. Let me say that again, he's an Iron man of action! Not content with just the usual skin armor, he went out and made himself a suit that will protect him from all sorts of things like: bullets, cats, dogs, rain, and maybe a car!

Want to try something really neat? Sure you do! So get some liquid nitrogen, you know, the gaseous-watery stuff and submerge your hand in its negative -320 degree F goodness in front of an audience. Then take your hand out and look awesome in front of all your friends. A bit of caution though, it can give you frostbite and your sorry little fingers can fall off. ( That deserves an unhappy face emote =/ )

Oh you don't want to try it now, you say. Well that's probably a good thing because it takes a bit of timing to get this trick right. Really, you don't want your hand in this thing for more than a second because the gas that forms around your hand the moment you submerge it in this all-so-good-vat of freezing liquid dissipates and you're left with no protective barrier.

They should have gotten panda's to guard their farm because then they could say, "Ah, it's Pandemonium!" when their stash was raided. = )

A new device developed by the U.S. Air Force has been created that allows for the direct transfer of power from an active power line. This clever gadget allows soldiers to tap into much needed energy quickly without hassle.

An engineer at an Air Force research lab in Dayton, Ohio, has figured out how to harness electricity from power lines via a system called RAPS. RAPS is a connecting device that’s attached to the end of a long cable. When the device is thrown over a power line, a blade at the end pierces the power line and completes the circuit that brings electricity down to the soldier. And that can mean a lot in the desert or jungle.

One problem though; how many power lines are in the desert and jungle?...

Hello interwebs, I must admit it's been awhile since I've last logged on. Don't take that as a bad sign. Distance can be a sign of love, right? Anyways, I'm ready to use my not-so-valuable time to share my less than talented witting skills with the hungry void that is the internet! I've decided to try something a bit different too. So bear with me, I'm going to share some thoughts on news articles that have no connection with each other. It's what I like to call: "Pow, News Time!"

So scanning through the good ol' online news today, it looks like it's been another interesting week. To start with, Tiger still has his proverbial balls on the line when it comes to his sponsers. Who would have thought that a simple car accident, like running into a tree would have caused so much entertainment. Not the news media, I'll say that much. Women are popping out of corner and closet, and Tiger can't whack the moles down fast enough. Now apparently his wife is divorcing him, according to so called 'close' sources...yeah whatever. What do people know anyways. Tiger is a gold mine, one does not simply walk away from a money printing machine because of a few (erm, maybe more) incidents. Maybe I'm just looking at this the wrong way.

What else is in the news, Avatar the movie. For the longest time I thought this had something to do with that show, um, the Last Air Bender. Then when I saw a trailer I was like, wtf, what's this? Anyways, I guess the movie is coming out pretty soon, and according to the BBC, the reviews have been 'positive'. Eye candy is nice, but I'm hoping for a good story that's at least semi-cogent. I'm all for stuff blowing up, but when it turns into a story with a bad plot and horrible one-liners, graphics can only go so far in making up for it. (Transform!)

Another cool story is about Google, and they're going full tilt into the phone market. The feeling I'm getting right now is companies and analyst seem skeptical about it. In the since that they think it's a fail-idea. Reasons, low margin market and pissing off partners like Motorola who use the Android software. I guess people think that the market is too full at the moment to support Google in the phone market. All I know is that once Google puts its force behind a project it usually turns out pretty good. So I'm not too sure these skeptics are on the ball in this case, but we'll see in the future I guess.

These wall ads are made with Velcro and are (as far as I know) only in Paris at the moment. The motivation behind the ad was a bottle that offered a better grip. Pumpkin Boats

Everyone loves a good show with pumpkins, right? you can carve them to make cool designs, chuck them out of a pumpkin chucking cannon (which is awesome too), or you can ride in them like a boat. As you can tell, these people chose the third option. Now personally if we're going with the a la carte method, I'd like to combine all three together, or at least the pumpkin cannon with the boat. Just think of how far that thing will fly! (not very far, that's what I'm guessing)

Better yet, have a pumpkin cannon on the boat to shoot the other pumpkin boaters. "Aye, gi'e me all you're doubloons. Aye, me parrot concurs."

Apparently monkeys are also freaked out by their zombie counter parts. I don't find it surprising, really who doesn't hate zombies! Those stupid realistic versions of ourselves are always popping up in the most unexpected places. Like on the T.V. or Youtube when you do something really stupid because you got drunk and thought it would be fun to appear on failblog. That wasn't me, was it? It must be a zombie!

Pressure Sensitive Keyboard [Microsoft]

Microsoft has been working on uses for a pressure sensitive keyboard. One of the uses they've come up with is better password protection. Basically, it doesn't just know the key's you've typed, but also how you've type them [Gizmodo]. Okay, now I also want a pressure sensitive mouse: that would be awesome for photoshop.

Back to the keyboard. I agree this is a step forward in password protection, but say someone has a key logger on their computer. I bet the logger will be able to copy the pressure of your typing as well. So the lesson here is, stay away from key loggers!

Pumpkin Designs!

Are you guys ready for Halloween yet? It's just around the corner! But if you're not, I've got just the thing. A whole bunch of custom pumpkins! These designs all look really cool, and when you hit the jump you'll be able to tell that there is a theme going on here. Who knows, maybe I'll just try to copy one of these pumpkins.

We'll see how they turn out for me though. If they're any good I'll might just post a few.

Wanna watch a guy get punched out for being an ass? Hell yeah, I thought you guys did! It's not clear why this fight started. From what I can gather, it boils down to one person being an ass. The person in white (Les Andrews) is the ass, and is apparently part of the "yob" culture. The term "yob" is new to me, but apparently means something along the line of "uncouth or thuggish" in the UK. The person in black (Burly Jason) is a Gulf War veteran, and a has two black belts.

The video takes a bit to get to the good part, but the buildup is worth the wait! So don't skip around.

I was going through the site to fix some of my more glaring typos, and I thought you guys might get a kick out of seeing stupid public mess-ups. I'm not sure if these pictures qualify as 'engrish', but it's pretty close if you ask me. Maybe 'engrish' has to do with foreigners whose first language isn't English, I can't say for sure.

Gundam-themed wedding

I didn't think I'd see the day. someone has actually gone and had a Gundam wedding. I have so many emotions running through me right now it's hard to express them all; confusion is one of them (is confusion an emotion?). Anyways, it was bound to happen, and since Japan is building all of those awesome statues lately. It seems like the perfect time to have an awesome wedding. I think we could all use some that Giant Robot Love, in Japan.

The groom dressed up as the protagonist Amuro, and the director of the anime series even showed up to give them a special plaque.[Tokyomango]

Chubik, as you can see is an interesting change from the run-of-a-mill Rubik's cube. I like the idea, and I wonder if it would actually make it harder to solve the puzzle. I must warn you guys though, if you challenge me in a game of 'cube I'm probably going to mop the floor with you. That's right, you're reading the words of a master puzzle solver. I've complete a whole two sides before on a regular Rubik's cube; beat that!

I don't know about you guys, but I'm really digging these (fan designed) Alienware speakers. They remind me of some kind of weird-ass alien venus fly trap, which is awesome! Because I always wanted my speakers to give off the 'I'm going to bit the crap out of your hand' feeling.

Musical Stairs (Volkswagen)

Volkswagen is getting pretty creative lately with their ads. Earlier they did a commercial with the deepest trashcan in the world that was really just a rigged can that played music every time people threw away their junk. Now, in an attempt to get more people to use the stairs in a busy area, they rigged the stairs so they'd play piano music. It's pretty interesting, check it out.

When I search for things to post, I usually peruse the interwebs until I find something that catches my eye. This solar-panel structure concept for Dubai has done just that. Designed by Graft-Lab, the building is supposedly built to work 'smarter, and not harder' when it comes to collecting the Sun's waves. Bet you couldn't have figured that one out. The massive solar panels weren't a dead give away, right? hehe

Powermats!

Finally! Powermats have been released for sale. I've been waiting for these things for a while, and we've seen the concept in other designs before. They cost about $100 plus $40 for the receiver on each gadget. But forget about the cost for now, these things are really cool, and not just because people can be lazy and not plug a gadget in. I like them because it represents an improvement in energy transfer and technology.

Back to the cost. I'm not sure I'd buy one at that high of price to be honest. I'm more of a wait and see kind of guy. I'm pretty sure they'll come down in price once more companies start producing them, but who knows.

Gaxaly in Turmiol

The European Space Agency (ESA) has released some new pictures of our Galaxy. These images come from a test run of the Herschel observatory, which will focus on studying cold material in our galactic plan, and how that material affects planet formation. Apparently these pictures show unexpected signs of activity in the Milky Way. The universe is in more turmoil then astronomers previously suspected.

"The resulting images reveal an extremely rich reservoir of cold material in the Galactic Plane that is seen to be in a previously unsuspected state of turmoil. Interstellar material appears to be condensing in a continuous and interconnected maze of filaments and strings of newly-forming stars in all stages of development. The observations yield additional information about this cold material - such as how much there is, its mass, temperature and composition, and whether or not some of it is collapsing to form new stars." [ESA]

Superfluid helium cryogen was used to create these images via a SPIRE (top) and PACS (bottom) imaging
mode. these pictures focus on the Southern Cross constellation, which is 60 degrees from the Galactic Center.

Golden (poo) Statue

This golden statue is a little out of the ordinary; offbeat you could say. Others have called it a Golden Poo, and I can't disagree with them. It's exactly what it looks like. Now, why some designer would create something that is probably the lovechild of Whinny the Pooh Bear and some honey pot, I don't know. I can only stare in awe of it's magnificence!
